Observatoire Pharos, JDPC-Jos and CAFOD are carrying out a study in the States of Plateau and Kaduna, in Nigeria.
Observatoire Pharos is looking for a researcher in anthropology, social sciences, ethnology, contemporary history, political science or another relevant discipline, specialising in cultural, religious and identity issues
Observatoire Pharos: A French NGO founded in 2011, Observatoire Pharos envisions a world in which cultural and religious diversity is an asset rather than a factor of violence, exclusion or identity-based isolation. It has three missions:
JDPC-Jos: Social Justice and Human Development for Peace Initiative (JDPC) of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos operates as the social arm of the Catholic Church, a Faith-Based Organisation (FBO) with the mandate to take care of the social needs of the Church through communities. With acceptable international standard and global best practices, JDPC engages in the following thematic areas Animation and Research, Archdiocesan Women Empowerment Programme (AWEP), Emergency Preparedness and Response Training Department (EPRT), Good Governance and Human Rights, Peacebuilding and Conflict Transformation, and Rural and Urban Development.
We serve all humanity irrespective of religious, ethnic or racial affiliation to uphold the dignity of the human person.
JDPC is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a non-profit organization with the name; Social Justice and Human Development for Peace Initiative with a five-man Board of Trustees.
The organization is guided by its strategic plan in all its interventions to address specific critical issues of concern through specifically designed activities within six different departments:
CAFOD: (Catholic Agency For Overseas Development) is an international development charity that works with communities in Nigeria to fight poverty and inequality, build peace, and provide practical help in emergencies. We focus on areas where women, girls, and vulnerable groups are marginalized, youth are restless, environmental degradation occurs, and communities struggle to cope with disasters. CAFOD works through local partners and their global Church network.
The study will be based on the Barometer of Cultural and Religious Pluralism.
The Cultural and Religious Pluralism Barometer is a tool developed by the Pharos Observatory to assess and report on the level of identity-related tensions within a society. It provides an indication of a society's ability to preserve the common good. The Barometer uses an innovative, replicable methodology to analyse cultural and religious dynamics, taking into account facts, perceptions and opinions. It identifies the forces of fragmentation as well as the forces of cohesion, and alerts of the risks of conflict. This evidence-based assessment provides a diagnosis and recommendations. These are addressed to decision-makers and civil society players, and lead to advocacy actions and support for the implementation of appropriate solutions to bring peace to societies.
Working with the project coordinator and the Pharos Observatory's associate expert, the researcher will be tasked with documentary research, surveys and analysis report, in line with the methodology of the Pluralism Barometer.
They will be responsible for the following tasks:
Justice Development and Peace/Caritas (JDPC) is one of the seven commissions of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos registered with CAC as Social Justice and Human Development for Peace Initiative. This Commission is responsible for social development activities in the Archdiocese. Though the JDPC is an organization within the Catholic Church its activities do not benefit only Catholics or Christians. The JDPC serves all Humanity regardless of religious or ethnic affiliation. It is involved in different aspects of human development, these include: Democracy and Good governance, Civic Education, Agriculture, Rural Water Supply, Human Rights/Legal Aid, Street Children, juvenile delinquencies Under the Care for Children Programme, Prison Ministry, Women Empowerment and Peace Building.
Bokkos LGA is located in the central part of Plateau State with a projected population of 264, 100 people. For over 10 years, Bokkos LGA has been plagued by sustained killings, resulting in the death of hundreds of people and the destruction of houses and farmlands, leaving a trail of devastation and despair in its wake as many have forcefully left their ancestral land to leave as IDPs in neighboring communities. The sustained attacks on Bokkos over the past decade have had far-reaching implications on farmers as they are unable to tend to their crops, herders fear venturing into the fields with their livestock, and market traders struggle to make ends meet in an atmosphere of fear and insecurity. Proficient agricultural experts to revive and bring to stability the once-thriving economy of Bokkos will be of utmost importance.
